‘Peter Obi is a Political Party, ADC Nothing But Birthday Party’ – Lawyer Comments on Defection

ABUJA — Human Rights Lawyer Ikechukwu Obasi Esq. has waded into the leadership crisis in ADC, describing Peter Obi as “a political party” in himself while dismissing the ADC’s political weight without him, as he dumps ADC.

In a post shared on his official X handle, Obasi wrote: “Peter Obi is a political party. ADC is nothing but a birthday party without him. Rumours are circulating that he may defect to a new political party. Whether it’s true or not, know this and know peace.”

The comments come amid renewed speculation about Obi’s political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been mentioned in recent coalition discussions, with unconfirmed reports linking Obi to a new platform.

Obasi’s post suggests he believes Obi’s personal political brand outweighs the structures of parties he associates with. “Birthday party” is used here to imply the ADC lacks substance or staying power without Obi’s involvement.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, has not publicly addressed the defection rumours. ADC national officials have also not issued a statement as of press time.

Obi left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Labour Party in May 2022, weeks before the 2023 primaries. He secured over 6.1 million votes, finishing third behind Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.
