The Alliance for Humanist Democracy in Nigeria (AFOHUDIN) has raised concerns over alleged moves by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying defectors from the party claim he has hijacked ADC and turned it into a “personal party.”

In a statement signed by the group, AFOHUDIN said: “The law makers who defected from ADC alleged that Atiku has hijacked ADC as his personal party. If this is true, then it seems that he is working with the incumbent.”

The group warned that “this is a point in time Nigerians need to step up politically and not seek personal interest and self-aggrandisement,” adding that “those factors contribute to Nigeria’s political stagnation.”

AFOHUDIN also referenced the power rotation arrangement, stating: “The next Four years still belongs to the South by zoning.” It further pointed out that zoning contribute immensely to crippling democracy and political competence in Nigeria.

The organisation described itself as a humanist body “dedicated to building a democratic and social welfarist society where religious freedom, true secularism, equality of all humans, all tribes, all ethnic groups in Nigeria, true democracy and human rights prevail.”

The statement follows a wave of defections from ADC and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. The ADC used to be at the centre of coalition talks involving opposition figures including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso until the duo defected NDC.

Atiku Abubakar and the ADC have not responded to the allegations as of press time.
