A Nigerian social commentator and activist Mariam Oyiza Aliyu has publicly called for an Igbo presidency in 2027, throwing her weight behind Peter Obi in a Facebook post that has gained traction online.

In the post, Mariam Oyiza Aliyu wrote: “Lets give Igbos a chance to rule too.. Peter Obi for president. !”

The statement adds to ongoing conversations around power rotation and regional representation ahead of the 2027 general elections. Peter Obi, a former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, has remained a prominent opposition figure and is reportedly in talks to formalize a move to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The call for an Igbo president has been a recurring theme in Nigeria’s political discourse since the return to democracy in 1999, with advocates arguing it would promote inclusivity and national unity.
