The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has co-authored a document called The Sokoto Declaration with Us Activist Mazi Mike Arnold, according to a press release issued on Thursday.

The announcement was made by Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Esq., on his official X account. Ejimakor stated that he was authorised by Kanu to disclose that the duo had “drafted The Sokoto Declaration — a statement of common cause, a call to all who value human rights and self-determination, and a light for the path ahead.”

According to the press release, the document is scheduled for formal release on May 30, 2026, via Biafra Radio.

The press release did not provide details on the content of the declaration. Sokoto is a major city in northwestern Nigeria and the historic seat of the Sokoto Caliphate.

Kanu has been in Sokoto Prison since November, 2026 after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja sentenced him to life imprisonment over terrorism charges. The sentence is currently a subject of appeal before the court of appeal. His legal team has maintained that Kanu’s ordeals are politically motivated and has called for his release and a political solution  to the Biafra question.
