“Gradually Sheikh will Become Pastor For Votes” Activist Mubarak Speaks on Religious Identity and Politics in Nigeria

Human rights activist and foremost African humanist Mubarak Bala has sparked heated debate on social after a comment on his official Facebook handle suggesting that religious identity is increasingly used as a political tool in Nigeria went viral.

In the post, Bala wrote: “Gradually Sheikh will become Pastor for votes, or even, run as deputy to a Pastor Governor.”

The statement follows the wave of prebendaliam in Nigeria’s politics particularly the role of religion in electoral politics and the alignment of political candidates across religious lines.

Bala, who has been active on issues of freedom of religion and belief in Nigeria, did not provide further details or name specific individuals in the post.

Bala has faced persecution, prosecution and lawsuit for criticising Islam and calling for the prevalence of religious freedom in Nigeria and across Africa steeped in religious intolerance and clampdown on freethinking life-stance. He is widely recognised globally as the hero of African humanism.
