Kanu’s Lawyer Ejimakor Gives Update on Appeal and Diplomatic Efforts

ABUJA — The special counsel to the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has given an update on the appeal process stating that the appeal process is progressing.

Ejimakor further disclosed in the X update that efforts to resolve the matter outside the judicial process are equally underway.

In a Saturday post on his official X handle, Ejimakor stated that the appeal is “currently on the Brief stage” adding that “resolving the matter outside the judicial process is receiving intense high-level attention.”

“Men are at work rallying the international community towards his release in the near term,” the post further revealed.

Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, was last year November convicted of terrorism-related charges by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The conviction is currently being appealed with the special counsel, Ejimakor giving an update on the appeal process.

Kanu got into loggerhead with the Federal government of Nigeria for seeking self-determination for the defunct Eastern Nigeria. While the right to self determination is guaranteed under Article 20 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights Act, Nigeria’s government considers Kanu’s activities as affront to the country’s sovereignty.

Commentators, legal and political experts have recommended political solutions to the self-determination agitation and not jail term and wanton persecution.
