Rights Lawyer Marshall Decries National ‘Frivolities’ Amid Insecurity, Governance Breakdown

Human rights and public interest lawyer Marshall Abubakar has expressed deep concern over what he described as national prioritisation of “frivolities” while “fundamental issues threatening our existence & nationhood” persist.

In an update on his official Facebook handle, Abubakar wrote: “I feel very disturbed we have abandoned very fundamental issues threatening our existence & nationhood for frivolities. Insecurity; bandits, kidnappers & Boko haram terrorists ravage our country & kill us daily. There is now a total breakdown of governance in the country, infrastructural advancement is now in abeyance, our democracy is under existential threat yet we seem not angry enough about these exacerbating & disturbing situation but giving to frivolities… can we #focus & save Nigeria#”

Abubakar did not reference specific incidents or policies in the post but his statement comes amid ongoing security challenges in several regions, including attacks linked to banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and insurgency. Reports from security agencies and civil society groups have noted continued incidents in the North West, North Central, and North East.

The lawyer also cited what he called a “total breakdown of governance” and stalled infrastructural development, adding that the country’s democracy faces an “existential threat.”

The Office of the National Security Adviser and the Ministry of Defence have in recent briefings outlined ongoing military operations against non-state armed groups.
