Dispute Over INEC Chair’s Alleged X Account Widens as Ejimakor Raises Concern Over Integrity

Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, has publicly questioned the conduct of INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, over allegations concerning a social media account on X, formerly Twitter.
In a post on his official X handle, Ejimakor wrote: “The INEC Chairman already failed his first integrity test. Soon after his pro-APC @X (Twitter) account was bursted, he quickly ALTERED the username, locked the account, denied the account & created a new account. Is that how the election result/IREV is also going to be ALTERED?”
The post references earlier public claims linking Prof. Amupitan to the X handle @joashamupitan. On April 10, 2026, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, issued a statement saying Prof. Amupitan “does not own or operate any X account,” describing contrary claims as “baseless” and attributing such accounts to impersonators.
Prof. Amupitan, a law professor from the University of Jos, was nominated by President Bola Tinubu on October 9, 2025, confirmed by the Senate on October 16, 2025, and sworn in as INEC Chairman on October 23, 2025, succeeding Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
The Independent National Electoral Commission operates the INEC Result Viewing Portal, IReV, for uploading polling unit results during elections. The Commission has previously stated that IReV and other election technologies have audit trails and safeguards against unauthorized changes.
