Viral Post Alleges Coordinated Political Sermons in Lagos Churches Ahead of 2027 Polls

A social media post circulating widely online alleged that some large churches in Lagos are recently delivering sermons and program themes intended to create voters apathy among Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the post, authored by Iniobong Udoh, she stated that she had observed a pattern of sermons that she described as psychologically constructed to make Nigerians “emotionally withdraw from voting and accepting change as impossible.” She said the trend was becoming too coordinated to be random.
Udoh pointed to recent statements and themes from several prominent Lagos churches. She cited remarks attributed to Pastor E.A. Adeboye suggesting the next president had already been chosen by God, and comments attributed to Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo describing Peter Obi as the best candidate but unlikely to win. She also referenced a program theme at another popular church centered on “Jesus being the best political cover.”
According to the post, the timing, location, and pastors involved, along with the emotional direction of the sermons, point to a deliberate strategy. Udoh linked the alleged pattern to the ruling All Progressives Congress, arguing that with economic hardship limiting the party’s ability to campaign on performance, the focus had shifted to influencing public morale and hope.
She said the approach involves acknowledging that opposition figures such as Peter Obi represent competence, while concluding with messages that suggest victory is impossible, that God has already decided, or that Nigerians should focus on heaven instead of politics.
Udoh urged Nigerians to subject church sermons to critical examination, saying that faith without wisdom allows manipulation. She argued that Nigeria’s current situation is the result of choices made by citizens and leaders.
“God will not come down from heaven to thumbprint ballot papers. Nigerians will,” she wrote, adding that some sermons are politically engineered and designed to weaken public resolve.
The post has been widely shared on social media platforms. The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Kingsway International Christian Centre, and the APC have not issued public responses to the claims. Pastor Adeboye and Pastor Ashimolowo have not released statements addressing the specific remarks attributed to them.
