‘Kanu Chose Prison Over Riches to Save Our Future,’ Says Media Personality Amarachi

Media personality and X user Amarachi has publicly described jailed IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as her “hero,” saying he preferred imprisonment over wealth to secure the future of younger generations.

In a post on her official X handle, Amarachi wrote: “Imagine a man chooses prison over Greatness or Riche just to save the future of me and my unborn children Kanu is my Hero.”

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, November 20, 2025 was slammed a life sentence by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja . This was after he was convicted of terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Kanu’s continued ordeals remains a polarising issue in Nigeria, especially across the South-East, where sit-at-home protests and calls for his release have persisted. Supporters often describe his actions as self-sacrifice for the Igbo cause, while government officials accuse IPOB of fueling insecurity in the region. IPOB was proscribed by the Federal Government in 2017, a proscription which has been appealed against.

Amarachi’s post has drawn thousands of reactions online, with supporters echoing her sentiment and critics objecting to her characterisation.
