Peter Obi Emerges NDC Consensus Presidential Aspirant for 2027 Election

ABUJA – Former presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi has emerged as the consensus Presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election, after the party closed the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.
According to party officials, Obi was the only politician who completed the purchase of the presidential forms before the deadline expired on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
The NDC confirmed the development in a statement issued by National Secretary Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu. The party said the window for presidential aspirants had officially closed, while extending the deadline for other elective positions by one week to Sunday, May 24, 2026.
Obi reportedly emerged the sole aspirant after the former Anambra governor clinched the NDC ticket unopposed, strengthening speculation that he could be the party’s consensus candidate for 2027. The incident follows Obi’s recent defection to the NDC after dumping the African Democratic Congress.
The party has scheduled screening of aspirants from Tuesday, May 19 to Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Collection and return of nomination forms for cleared aspirants will run from May 20 to May 26.
The NDC’s X account also signaled Obi’s unopposed status with a short post reading “unopposed” at the close of the nomination window.
