Rights Lawyer Faults Police Clampdown on Delta Protesters Demanding Justice for Mene Ogidi

ABUJA — Human Rights Lawyer Ikechukwu Obasi has criticised the Nigeria Police Force over its handling of protests in Delta State following the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.

In a post on his official X handle, Obasi vehemently condemned what he described as a clampdown on peaceful protesters.

“The Police Force in Nigeria has continued to ruin their image. Why the clampdown on peaceful protesters in Delta merely expressing their dismay over the extrajudicial killing of a Deltan Mene,” he wrote.

He added: “It’s preposterous to beat a child and expect no crying. Can NPF ever get it right? Hmm”

The post comes after a video showed ASP Nuhu Usman of the Effurun Area Command fatally shooting Ogidi while the victim knelt with his hands tied and pleaded for his life. The incident has sparked protests in parts of Delta State, with residents demanding accountability.

The Delta State Police Command said ASP Usman was arrested the same day and transferred to Abuja to face a Force Disciplinary Committee under Force Order 237.

Recall that Obasi had earlier commented on the case, describing Nigeria as a “den of impunity” and expressing doubt that state policing alone would prevent abuse by authorities.

The Nigeria Police Force has not issued a statement on the reported clampdown on protesters at press time.
