Marital Safety Advocate Condemns Domestic Violence, Urges Victims to Flee Abusive Marriages

Media advocate Ogboo Onyinyechukwu has urged victims of domestic violence to leave abusive marriages, stating that “physical abuse is not accepted” under any circumstance.

In a widely circulating update on her official Facebook handle, Onyinyechukwu wrote: “No matter what a woman does to a man, physical abuse is not accepted. Even if she cheated on you, please report to the authorities and divorce her.”

She reiterated that domestic violence “has made many children motherless and fatherless” and recounted a personal experience from her village. According to her, a man repeatedly beats his wife at “every provocation” until one incident nearly ended her life.

“She ran to our compound for safety. We helped her pack her bags when her husband was away, and she left — yes, she left,” Onyinyechukwu wrote.

Addressing women directly, she added: “My sister, instead of staying and making videos in this situation where there is beating and domestic violence, to prove who is right or wrong. Run for safety. It is better to be separated and live to see your children grow than to die and leave them because of a beast of a man.”

“If you choose to stay and die in the hands of a beast because of marriage, then you’re choosing the wrong path. Let’s end abusive marriages,” she concluded.

Onyinyechukwu stated this amid viral video circulating on social media about alleged domestic violence. She has admonished spouses especially women to flee abusive marriages instead of staying and making videos and consequently exposing themselves to marital harm.

Domestic violence remains a major rising concern in Nigeria. The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, criminalises spousal battery and other forms of abuse.
