Sokoto Prison Remains ‘Pilgrimage Site’ for Activists Until Kanu is Freed —Lawyer

ABUJA — Human rights lawyer Ikechukwu Obasi Esq. has waded into the conversation surrounding IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Incarceration in Sokoto prison stating that Sokoto Prison will remain a destination for “true activists” as long as Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, remains in Sokoto dungeon.

Obasi, who is notably known for filing fundamental rights and public interest suits, made this striking statement on his official X handle.

“As far as MNK continues to be incarcerated despite serious legal concerns bordering on fair hearing/trial which is the substance of the appeal before Court of Appeal, Sokoto Prison will remain a place of pilgrimage for true activists, freedoms fighters/advocates, not bloggers,” Obasi wrote.

Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at Sokoto Prison after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court convicted him on terrorism-related charges in November 2025.

Obasi said the appeal before the Court of Appeal raises issues of “fair hearing/trial.” No date has been fixed for judgment on the appeal.

The statement adds to ongoing political debate in the Southeast over Kanu’s ordeals. Earlier this month, Special Counsel to Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, said the “City Boys” political movement failed to gain traction in the region because Igbo youths are unwilling to participate in elections while Kanu remains in prison.

Similarly, US Activist Mike Arnold has days ago condemned the continuous incarceration of the IPOB leader whereas notable jihadists one of whom placed bounty on a Christian cleric go with impunity.
