Social Critic Raises Alarm, Questions INEC Chair’s Neutrality Ahead of 2027 Polls

Social critic and analyst Maduabuchi G. Amana has waded into the controversy surrounding the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission, questioning the political neutrality of INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan

In a widely read post shared on his official social media handle, Amana argued that while the INEC Chairmanship is expected to be non-partisan and politically neutral, “that’s not the case with Prof. Joash Amupitan.”

According to Amana, “from many indications Baba appears to be a full-blooded APC man — whether or not he is a registered member — and also a cap-wearing agbadoite.” He further cited the chairman’s “stance in respect to ADC’s internal affairs and his conception of the idea of the just cancelled PVC revalidation exercise” as examples that, in his view, show “obvious political involvement rather than a neutral umpire.”

Amana concluded his remarks with a call for vigilance, writing: _“However, we all should shine our eyes come 2027 general election.”

The comments add to ongoing public debate over public trust in INEC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Critics and civil society groups have repeatedly stressed that the credibility of the electoral body hinges on the perceived impartiality of its leadership.

As of press time, Prof. Joash Amupitan nor INEC has issued a response to Amana’s statement. The ADC is also yet to comment on the reference to its internal affairs.
