Nigerian lawyer Stella Nnenna Justice has vehemently and publicly condemned a disparaging remark she described as “heartbreaking and wicked” for calling mothers of only female children barren.

In a widely circulated post on her official Facebook handle, Stella said: “A daughter is not a curse. A daughter is a blessing. Having only female children is not the same as being barren.”

She further criticised the stance that women that birth only girls are inferior to those who bear boys, questioning the logic behind it. “A woman that carried pregnancy for 9 months, went through labour, pain, sleepless nights and gave birth to beautiful children is now called barren because the children are girls?” she wrote.

Stella highlighted the role of women in raising men and in society at large. “Who raised most of the men shouting ‘I want a son’ today? A woman. Who becomes a wife, mother, doctor, lawyer, judge, nurse, teacher and leader tomorrow? A female child,” she said.

She further added that many families depend financially and emotionally on their daughters, disclosing that “there are daughters carrying entire families on their heads.”

“A female child is not a mistake. A female child is not a punishment. A female child is not lesser than a male child. Please respect daughters. A female child is a blessing, not a mistake,” she concluded.

The post was made by Stella Justice Nnennaya of Legal and Marriage Clinic with Stella. The post which sparked heated debate has drawn support online from users speaking against gender bias in attitudes toward children.
