Akwa Ibom Court Jails 46-Year-Old Man For Life Over Incestuous Rape

The Akwa Ibom State High Court has sentenced 46-year-old Imeh Sunday to life imprisonment for incestuous rape.
Delivering judgment on Monday, Hon. Justice Blessing Egwu imposed the maximum sentence after what the court described as “overwhelming evidence” presented by the prosecution.
In a statement on the conviction, Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), led by Child Rights Lawyer/Activist James Ibor, commended the survivor, her grandparents, Attorney General Ededem Charles Ani, the Commissioner of Police, the judiciary, and BRCI staff and volunteers for their “commitment and support toward the survivor and her recovery.”
BRCI noted that the sentence followed the strength of evidence led during trial. A photograph of the convict, Imeh Sunday, was released.
The case underscores ongoing efforts by state actors and civil society groups to secure justice for survivors of sexual violence in Akwa Ibom State.
